  • Occupational Therapy

At Promising Pathways, we take a holistic approach to therapy, considering each child's unique needs, strengths, and interests. Our experienced and compassionate occupational therapists work closely with families and other healthcare providers to develop individualized treatment plans. We also provide parent education and support to help families continue to promote their child's development outside of therapy sessions.

What We Treat

We provide occupational therapy assessment and treatment for the following areas.

    Visual Motor Skills

Visual motor skills are a complex skill set that include a variety of underlying skills including visual perception, motor control, and hand-eye coordination. These skills allow us to translate a visual image or plan into a motor action. These types of skills might include catching a ball, building with blocks, or drawing. Some children have trouble coordinating their visual and motor systems. Occupational therapists can help address a variety of skills needed to complete visual motor tasks.

    Fine & Gross Motor Skills

Gross motor skills use the large muscles in the core, arms, and legs to complete everyday tasks. Gross motor skills might include jumping, running, or climbing. Occupational therapists can assist in the development of these skills by addressing balance & coordination, strength & endurance, motor planning, body awareness, and sensory processing. Fine motor skills are the ability to make movements using the small muscles in our hands and wrists. Children rely on these skills to do key tasks in school, during play, and in everyday life. Fine motor skills might include grasping toys, feeding, dressing, using scissors, or writing.

    Emotional Behavioral Regulation

Emotional and behavioral regulation refers to a child’s ability to manage their emotions and behaviors. While some fluctuations are typical, some children have ongoing struggles in controlling their feelings and/or behavior. Occupational therapists can assist in self-regulation, or management of emotions and behaviors, by helping children learn how to manage responses and behaviors, allowing them to learn, grow, and succeed within their daily activities.

    Sensory Integration

Sensory integration relates to the process in how our bodies receive information from our seven senses (i.e., sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, vestibular, proprioception), organize the information, and use it to participate in everyday activities. It allows us to make sense of the world around us. Some children have difficulty processing the sensory stimuli they receive. Occupational therapists can help children learn how to adjust sensory stimuli in their environment so they are able to thrive.

    Self-Help Skills

Self-help skills are the everyday tasks children need to learn how to complete, so they are ready to participate in life activities. They include dressing and undressing, feeding, grooming, sleeping, etc. Occupational therapists can help improve motor and sensory skills to support these daily self-help/care skills.

    Assistive Technology Training

Assistive technology is the use of adaptive tools, equipment and systems to help children with disabilities participate in a variety of skills at home and at school. Occupational therapists can assist in evaluating and training in the use of assistive technology to support writing, memory, and executive functioning skills.

    Evaluations

Evaluation, Written Report, and Review Meeting

Following an initial phone conversation, we will complete an initial evaluation which may include observations, assessments, review of pertinent records, and caregiver input. Evaluations typically take 1 to 2 hours. After this, the therapist will compile a written report which will be reviewed with you via phone or video conference at a later date.

    OT Services

    One-on-One Sessions

Occupational Therapy sessions focus on working towards goals that the therapist and family collaboratively set together. Sessions typically range from 30-60 minutes in length, and involve the use of therapeutic approaches and activities. Family-only sessions may occur throughout the plan of care to ensure that the therapist and family are on the same page.

    Consultation

    Collaborative Consultation

Consultation sessions can be utilized as a stand-alone service. They aim to utilize a collaborative consultation approach where we can discuss any questions or concerns that you may have, and problem solve together. This may be a good option for you if you feel that you are not quite ready for direct therapy services, but still have concerns and questions. Sessions can occur in person or via phone or video conference.

Daycare & Private School Based Therapy

    Convenient Time and Location

We understand how challenging it can be to find services that fit into your child and family’s busy schedules. If your child is attending a private school, preschool, or daycare we are happy to discuss options for in-school therapy at a convenient time for your child, the school, and their teacher.

Our Process

We use a systematic and client-centered approach to address the needs and goals of our clients.

  • Step 1

    Introductory Call

A no-cost, 10-15 minute phone call to review your concerns, and determine if our services are the best fit for your needs.

  • Step 2

    Evaluation

An evaluation may consist of formal and informal assessments, based upon the areas of concern and typically last one to two hours. Once complete, you will receive a written report. A physician referral may be required if you plan to submit superbills to insurance for reimbursement.

  • Step 3

    Evaluation Review & Planning

We will meet together via phone or video-conference to review the results of the evaluation and collaboratively plan the next steps including goal setting and sessions.

  • Step 4

    Occupational Therapy Sessions

We begin sessions, at a frequency that we determine together. Sessions are one-on-one and will focus on reaching the goals we set together.

Frequently asked questions

Below you will find commonly asked questions. If you have questions that are not answered, or would like further information, please contact us.

  • Are you licensed?

Our occupational therapist, Jennifer, is licensed in the state of Colorado and board certified by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy.

  • Do you accept insurance?

We are an out of network provider, meaning that we do not accept insurance. We believe that this is a benefit to the client, as the family is able to make decisions regarding services that are not contingent upon insurance 'approval'.

  • Do you accept Medicaid?

Since we are private pay only, we are unable to see clients for direct therapy services who have Medicaid. It is against regulations to accept private payment (ex. cash, check, credit card, etc.) from clients with Medicaid coverage for services that are covered under your Medicaid plan. These regulations are designed for your protection, to prevent you from paying out of pocket for services that you are entitled to.
*Please inquire about other services that we provide that may support you.*

  • How can I pay for services?

We require payment at the end of your appointment. We accept payment through cash, check, or Venmo. We are also able to provide you with a Superbill to take to your insurance for potential reimbursement or for documentation for the use of HSA/FSA funds. Please check with your insurance provider for further information about “out-of-network” providers. Your insurance may require a physician’s referral before accessing “out-of-network” OT services. We are happy to support you in this process!

  • Why don’t you participate with insurance?

We aim to prioritize the needs of the child and family first. Often, insurance companies will dictate how many sessions of therapy a child is allowed to receive, how often those sessions need to occur and when assessments need to occur. By not participating with insurance, we are able to schedule sessions to fit your needs; putting you in control of your healthcare decisions. Additionally, you know the cost of each session and service up front, without any surprise bills from insurance companies months later.

  • Do I need a script from the doctor?

No, you do not need a script from your doctor prior to beginning services. You may need a referral/script from your doctor if you are planning to access your “out-of-network” benefits through your insurance. Please be sure to check with your insurance company to determine their specific needs.

  • Do I need to have an evaluation completed before beginning services?

Yes, an evaluation is required before beginning therapy services. This ensures that sessions will be targeted to the priority areas that we have determined as a team.

Do you have questions about your needs or about the services we provide? Please contact us, we would love to hear from you.
